Constipation and its causes
Constipation in a nursing mother can be determined by the following signs:
- bloating occurs (flatulence);
- poor discharge of gases, resulting in soreness in the intestinal area;
- defecation occurs less than 3 times a week;
- feces hard, sectional, reminiscent of sheep feces (black balls);
Constipation can be caused by a number of factors. After childbirth, a nursing mother still produces the hormone progesterone, which relaxes smooth muscles. The muscles of the intestine relax, and it ceases to contract intensively, as a result of which peristalsis is disturbed and there is a long delay in bowel emptying.
Another important factor is hemorrhoids that arose during pregnancy or childbirth. It causes great discomfort to a woman during bowel movements. Due to pain, a woman delays bowel movements each time, which contributes to the development of constipation.
Hormonal imbalances, such as thyroid disorders, which sometimes occur in expectant and lactating mothers, also lead to constipation.
Taking medications – iron, calcium – can also provoke stool retention.
Treatment of constipation in a nursing mother
General recommendations for getting rid of constipation for mom are as follows:
- Lead an active lifestyle, engage in light physical exercise daily.
- Include more fresh vegetables and fruits in the diet, do not abuse fatty, spicy and sweet foods.
- Exclude fixing foods from your menu – rice, legumes, jelly.
- Exclude white bread, animal fats, pastries, crackers, which also contribute to the fixation of the stool, gas formation and, accordingly, lead to constipation.
The diet of a nursing mother should include fermented milk products, vegetable oil, liquid soups, and more fiber. Very well help with constipation compotes of their dried fruits and a decoction of wild rose.
Laxatives for breastfeeding mothers
In chronic constipation, it is necessary to use laxatives so as not to stretch the intestines and prevent intoxication of the whole organism.
All laxatives are divided into several groups according to the international drug classification system:
- increasing the volume of intestinal contents and accelerating peristalsis;
- contact laxatives;
- enemas and suppositories.
Emollient laxatives act on the small intestine and soften the stool, making it easier for them to pass through the intestines.
Bulk preparations, such as mucofalk, as well as figs, sea kale, do not undergo digestion in the intestines, expanding, retain water and accelerate the act of defecation.
The laxative is recommended to be taken at night for natural bowel movement in the morning.
Enemas and suppositories are used for local effects on the rectum, thinning the feces. As a rule, they do not have side effects, except for a possible allergic reaction to the components.
However, there is a list of some drugs that are not recommended for a nursing mother, since the substances in their composition with mother’s milk can harm the baby’s body:
It is also not recommended to take laxatives based on senna – “Senade”, “Senadexin”. Such drugs can cause bloating and colic in the baby. Do not take any medication without consulting a doctor. A suitable drug in each individual case can only be prescribed by a specialist.
Irritant laxatives are not recommended during breastfeeding.
Laxative suppositories with glycerin are considered the safest method of dealing with constipation at the local level. Glycerin is not absorbed into the bloodstream, does not penetrate into the mother’s milk, which means it is safe for the baby. Candles do not have a therapeutic effect on the problem of constipation in a complex, they act one-time.
Folk remedies for constipation
One of the most effective and simple methods of dealing with constipation, promoting bowel movements, is to drink a glass of clean water on an empty stomach 30 minutes before a meal. At night, it is recommended to drink 1 glass of kefir, and during the day include more raw vegetables, dried apricots, prunes in your diet.
Fiber rich foods help relieve constipation
A laxative effect is given by figs soaked in milk. 1 glass of boiling milk is poured into a container with fruits, allowed to cool and taken 1 spoonful several times a day before meals.
A decoction of gooseberries also contributes to the timely emptying of the intestines in the morning. Boil 1 tablespoon of gooseberries by adding a glass of water. Drink infusion 3-4 times a day for half a cup.
Do not forget that taking laxatives is a temporary solution, taking drugs for a long time (more than 1 month) is not recommended. First you need to consult a doctor to identify the cause of constipation in a nursing mother and then take the necessary measures to eliminate it.
