Parents should be well aware that normally a child should not have any formations on the neck, therefore even an accidental finding in the form of a painless, small bump that does not disturb the baby in any way is a reason to urgently visit a pediatrician. To help make a diagnosis faster and more accurately, from the moment the formation is discovered to the moment you visit a specialist, start measuring the baby’s temperature 2-3 times a day and record the readings. You will provide this information at your first appointment.

By localization:

– on the front of the neck

– along the sides of the neck

– on the back of the neck (or in the region of the spinous processes of the cervical vertebrae)

By age of occurrence:

– formed long ago (for example, from birth)

– recently appeared

By the number of formations:

– single

– multiple

According to the description:

– painful or painless

– dense or elastic

– soldered to the underlying tissues or not

What diseases can be discussed

1. Oncological diseases – lymphogranulomatosis – the most dangerous cause of the appearance of bumps on the neck. It is this diagnosis that must be ruled out in the first place. Unfortunately, children also suffer from it. Enlarged dense motionless painless cervical lymph nodes can be the first and for some time the only sign of the disease. They may appear and after some time disappear, and then reappear. Such enlarged lymph nodes can be mistaken for a sign of SARS, and time will be lost on erroneous treatment. That is why a child with a similar formation on the neck should be fully examined and consulted by appropriate specialists.

2. The formations of a benign nature include:

– lipoma (wen) – similar to an enlarged lymph node, more often it is a single soft elastic ball, prone to a gradual increase in size. Education is painless, needs planned surgical treatment.

– atheroma (cyst) or fibroma – has signs similar to a lipoma, can grow to large sizes, is also painless, needs planned surgical treatment.

3. Furuncle – an extremely painful induration, the skin above it is changed (there is redness and local hyperemia). Usually, its appearance is accompanied by a deterioration in the general condition of the child (there are signs of intoxication, the temperature rises). The disease needs urgent surgical treatment and systemic antibiotics.

4. Cervical lymphadenitis is the most common cause of cervical lymph nodes enlargement in children. One or more groups of lymph nodes may be affected, on palpation they are enlarged, soft, painful to the touch. Often, lymphadenitis is a consequence of an acute respiratory viral infection. A regional increase in l / y is observed in many diseases:

submandibular (on the front surface of the neck) with angina, scarlet fever or paratonsillar abscess, diseases of the lower jaw (caries, pulpitis, periodontitis, osteomyelitis)

occipital (on the back of the neck) with rubella

parotid (on the lateral surface of the neck) with otitis media

packet enlargement of the cervical lymph nodes is characteristic of infectious mononucleosis. The lymph nodes are enlarged, painful on palpation, the general condition of the child suffers: there is a high fever, severe symptoms of intoxication, sore throat, and often there is a rash.

All these types of pathology are treated by a pediatrician or an infectious disease specialist.

5. A bump on the neck, as a result of an insect bite. Usually in such a situation, the child can remember the very moment of the bite. The formation hurts and itches, the general condition of the child does not suffer at all, or if the child is allergic, a systemic allergic reaction such as urticaria or Quincke’s edema may develop. On closer inspection, a bite mark can be found in the center of the formation.

6. Traumatic injury or mechanical stress (myositis). Usually in such situations there is an indication of the connection between the appearance of education and trauma or pronounced physical effort.

7. Education on the anterior surface of the neck may be associated with the pathology of the thyroid gland, and it can be both hypo- and hyperthyroidism. In the first case, the child will be inhibited, swelling will increase rapidly, heart rate will decrease, constipation will appear, dry skin, appetite will worsen, and body temperature will drop. In the second case, the body temperature will be constantly raised to subfebrile figures, the heart rate will be increased, the child will have an increased appetite, but at the same time lose weight. The detection of certain signs is an occasion to urgently show the child to an endocrinologist, donate blood for thyroid hormones, and perform an ultrasound of the organ.
