Properties of caffeine
Coffee is classified as a psychostimulant due to the content of the alkaloid caffeine. This substance is also found in tea, cocoa, cola. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system, but with prolonged use, addiction can develop – caffeinism or its variety – theism. The biological effects of this substance are manifested in the following:
- irritation of the respiratory and vascular center – increased respiration and heart rate;
- increased mental and physical activity;
- removal of fatigue;
- expansion of the blood vessels of the muscles, heart, kidneys, but narrowing – of the abdominal organs;
- increased diuresis and excretion of electrolytes;
- decreased platelet aggregation and blood clotting;
- stimulation of the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
After drinking a cup of coffee, the release of dopamine, the hormone of happiness, increases, and mood improves. But the effect persists for 40 minutes. After 3-6 hours, drowsiness and fatigue may develop.
Blood pressure under the influence of coffee rises in women with hypotension, but at normal levels, it remains unchanged. In hypertensive patients, an increase in heart rate also leads to a jump in pressure. The perception of coffee by the body depends on the type of nervous system and the number of adenosine receptors in the brain. With their large amount, caffeine is ineffective and can lead to pathological drowsiness, headache.
The diuretic effect appears 30 minutes after drinking a cup of coffee. It develops due to the expansion of the renal vessels, a decrease in the reabsorption of potassium, magnesium and other electrolytes.
Who needs to give up coffee
The effect of the drink on the trimesters of pregnancy is different. After conception, many women experience hypotension, so the drink will be beneficial. But in women with arterial hypertension, toxicosis, coffee will increase unpleasant symptoms. Bouts of nausea will intensify, and pressure will be less controlled.
From 14 to 27 weeks, harm is associated with impaired absorption of calcium, iron, increased excretion of magnesium, potassium. In pregnant women, the need for these substances increases several times. The lack of magnesium leads to an increase in the tone of the uterus, the threat of miscarriage or premature birth.
From 22 weeks, the first symptoms of preeclampsia may appear. Women with a predisposition to it should not drink coffee under the following conditions:
- excess body weight;
- preeclampsia during a previous pregnancy;
- kidney pathology;
- arterial hypertension before pregnancy.
In the third trimester, daily coffee consumption will lead to an increase in the tone of the uterus, which may result in the development of placental insufficiency. In women in the later period, an increase in the abdomen affects the position of the stomach, secretion increases. Coffee will lead to heartburn, stomach pain or exacerbation of gastritis.
Bad coffee before bed. Pregnant women are often troubled by insomnia, which is aggravated by the action of a stimulant drink.
There are studies that show the connection of drinking large amounts of coffee during pregnancy with the development of Tourette’s syndrome and chronic nervous tics in children.
The benefits of the drink
Small amounts of caffeine may be beneficial during pregnancy. At an early stage, with reduced blood pressure, one cup will help raise it to normal levels. At the same time, there is an increase in mental and physical activity.
The vasodilating effect is used for headache, which occurs due to spasm of arterioles. Pregnant women with migraine attacks can drink 2-3 cups of coffee a day. You can reduce the psychostimulating effect if you drink instant coffee. It contains 310–480 mg/l of caffeine. Espresso should be avoided, it contains caffeine content up to 1700–32250 mg/l. In ground weak coffee, the active substance content is up to 650 mg/l.
Despite the beneficial properties, there are medical contraindications for any drinks containing caffeine:
- stomach ulcer;
- vascular atherosclerosis;
- hypertonic disease;
In women with PKD, caffeine accelerates cyst growth and worsens the condition.
During the period of bearing a child, the benefits of using coffee are much less than the negative impact. For perfectly healthy women, 1-2 cups per day will not increase the risk of pregnancy complications. But with concomitant pathologies, the threat of interruption, toxicosis or gestosis, the drink is dangerous. Strong tea, Coca-Cola has a similar stimulating effect, so it is better for pregnant women to abandon them for the entire period of gestation.
